Republicans narrowly approved the tax bill on Thursday. Illinois representatives voted along party lines.

Vice President JD Vance broke a 50-50 tie to push President Donald Trump’s big bill of tax breaks and spending cuts over the top.

Democrats faced two painful options: allowing passage of a bill they believe gives the president vast discretion on spending decisions, or voting no and letting funding lapse. All told, 10 Democrats voted to break the party’s filibuster, allowing a final vote. On final passage, two Democrats supported the bill, which funds the government for another six months.

The proposal includes $4.5 trillion in tax breaks and $2 trillion in spending cuts. It kick-starts a weeks-long process to draft the details and merge it with the Senate’s package. But some say hitting those targets will mean cuts to Medicaid and other programs and services.

The order sparked uncertainty about a crucial financial lifeline for states, schools and organizations that rely on trillions of dollars from Washington.
