Would a Cubs wild-card berth be good enough for you? Should White Sox trade Luis Robert Jr.?

In this week’s “Polling Place,” we also asked if NASCAR’s Chicago Street Race should continue.

The Cubs have been in first place for over three months. Doesn’t that sound like an eventual division champion to you?

But the Brewers entered the weekend on a relentless 28-12 tear that had wiped away most of the Cubs’ lead and again cast Craig Counsell’s old team as the one the Cubs fans should be worried about most. Doesn’t it sound like the Cubs have a big ’ol problem to you?

In this week’s “Polling Place,” your home for Sun-Times sports polls on the social platform X, we asked if you’d take a Cubs wild-card berth right now or if you’re holding out for a division title.

“Settle for a wild-card spot? Heck, yes, like a drowning man ‘settling’ for some oxygen,” @RonaldVoigt4 commented.

“Just get to October,” @chicagochris50 wrote. “It would be a good start for this [group], plus anything can happen and any seed can get hot.”

Next, we asked if the White Sox should trade Luis Robert Jr. There weren’t a whole lot of “nos,” but there were some.

“Build a team for once!” @lordwalker_3 urged.

Last, we asked if the NASCAR Chicago Street Race should continue beyond this year.

“Another huge hassle for downtown dwellers,” @00723maui called it.

On to the polls:

Poll No. 1: The Cubs’ division lead has all but evaporated. If you could take it right now, would you settle for a wild-card berth for this team?

Upshot: Man, this vote was close. Now all the Cubs have to do is not completely blow everything.

Poll No. 2: Should the White Sox trade Luis Robert Jr.?

Upshot: One commenter said it would be “idiotic” to trade Robert. Another referred to the struggling hitter fielder as a “sea anchor.” There’s a new one.

Poll No. 3: Would you like to see the NASCAR Chicago Street Race continue next year and beyond?

Upshot: A “don’t care” seems closer to a “no” than it does to a “yes.”
